How to choose a detailing kit

Look past the piece count to coverage and quality. A good starter kit should let you complete a full safe wash and add some protection: a wash medium, a quality soap, a drying towel, and a wax or sealant. Beyond that, decide your priority: a builder kit with the broadest useful selection is the best all-rounder; a premium kit gives you higher-quality matched components for more money; a budget box covers the basics cheaply for a daily driver; and a quality-first kit from a warranty-backed brand is worth it if you value longevity over piece count.

What you’ll upgrade first

Even in a good kit, two things tend to get upgraded quickly. The included foam gunis usually a garden-hose type; once you own a pressure washer you’ll want a proper foam cannon. And the thinnest microfiber towels in a bargain kit are worth replacing with a couple of plush drying and buffing towels. A missing piece from most kits is a real vacuum— kits are exterior-focused, so budget for that separately if you want to do interiors too.
