Claying is the decontamination step that washing can’t do. Even a perfectly washed car has bonded contaminationstuck to the clear coat — industrial fallout, rail dust, overspray, tree-sap specks — that you can feel as roughness when you slide a hand (or a plastic bag) over clean paint. A clay bar or clay mitt shears that grit off, leaving glass- smooth paint that’s ready to wax or coat. Skip it and you’re sealing the grit in.

The one rule that matters: clay must have plenty of lubrication or it will marr the paint. That’s why complete kits — clay plus a dedicated lube — are the safe way to start. Grade matters too: a fine clay is beginner-safe for regular maintenance, while a medium grade cuts heavier contamination faster but is a little more likely to marr, so you follow it with a polish. How to choose a clay kit

Start with a complete kit unless you already own a clay lubricant, because claying dry scratches paint. For a well-kept car that just needs a yearly decon, a fine-grade clay is all you need. For neglected paint with heavy bonded fallout, a medium gradecuts faster — just plan to follow with a light polishto erase any marring. If you’re claying a whole car (or several) and value speed, a reusable clay mitt is dramatically faster than kneading a bar, and survives being dropped, which a bar does not.

Where claying fits

Clay after washing and drying, and before polishing or protecting. It’s a step you do once or twice a year, not every wash. On darker or softer paint, even fine clay can leave the faintest marring in the wrong light, which is why serious detailers clay thenpolish before applying a coating. What does a clay bar actually do?

It shears off bonded contamination that's stuck to your clear coat — industrial fallout, rail dust, overspray, sap — which washing can't remove. You feel the difference immediately: rough paint becomes glass-smooth, ready for wax or a coating.

How often should I clay my car?

Once or twice a year for most cars, or whenever the paint feels rough after washing (the 'plastic bag test' is the quick check). It's a decontamination step before protecting, not something you do every wash.

Clay bar or clay mitt — which is better?

A clay mitt is much faster over large panels and can be rinsed and reused if dropped, but carries a slightly higher marring risk. A traditional bar is gentler and cheaper but slower and must be thrown away if it hits the ground. For a whole car, many people prefer a mitt.

Will claying scratch my paint?

Not if you use plenty of lubricant and a fine-to-medium grade. Claying dry, or with a heavily contaminated bar, can cause light marring. On dark or soft paint, follow claying with a light polish to be safe — but with lube and reasonable care, claying is a safe DIY step.
