A step deeper is a single scratch that has dug into the clear coat but not through it. Under the light it reads as a distinct line rather than a haze, but it is still the same clear-coat material all the way down. These are the best candidates for compounding by hand or machine, because leveling the clear coat around the groove can make the scratch shallow enough to effectively disappear.

Scratches through the clear (needs more than a compound)

Once a scratch cuts through the clear coat into the color layer or all the way to primer, a compound is the wrong tool. There is no clear coat left to level in the bottom of that groove — the damage is below the surface you can safely remove. A scratch that shows a white or off-color line, or a different shade than the surrounding paint, is telling you it has broken through. These need filling with touch-up paint or professional repair, not abrasion.

The fingernail test

Before you buy anything or touch a pad to the paint, do the one diagnostic that matters most. Run a fingernail gently across the scratch, perpendicular to it.

  • Your nail glides over it and does not catch. The scratch is shallow enough that it is likely inside the clear coat. This is a candidate for compounding.
  • Your nail catches in the groove. The scratch has real depth, almost always through the clear coat. A compound will not remove it, and trying will only thin the surrounding clear.
  • You can see white, primer, or a different color in the line. The damage is into or through the paint. This is touch-up or body-shop work regardless of what your nail tells you.

The fingernail test is crude, but it is remarkably reliable for the one decision you actually need to make: attempt it yourself, or don’t. When in doubt, treat a borderline scratch as too deep — you can always step up to a pro, but you cannot un-thin a clear coat.

What a compound can — and can’t — do

A rubbing or polishing compound is a mild liquid abrasive. Worked across the paint, it shaves away a microscopically thin layer of clear coat, lowering the surface until it is level with the bottom of a shallow scratch so the groove no longer catches the light. Here is the part a lot of product marketing skips. A compound can only remove what is abovethe deepest part of the scratch. If the scratch goes deeper than the clear coat you can safely take off, no number of passes will reach the bottom of it — you will just run out of clear coat first. Clear coat is finite; grind through it and the color layer underneath has no protection and no gloss, which is a far worse problem than the scratch you started with. Step by step: removing a light scratch

Assuming the fingernail test said your scratch is inside the clear coat, here is the safe sequence. It is the same whether you finish by hand or with a machine.

  1. Assess the depth with the fingernail test.Confirm the scratch does not catch your nail and shows no white or color. If it does, stop here — this is a pro job.
  2. Wash and decontaminate the panel. Do a careful two-bucket wash and clay the area so there is no grit sitting on the paint. Working over trapped dirt just carves fresh scratches.
