How to Choose a Polishing Pad
Foam, microfiber, wool - and cutting versus finishing. The pad matters as much as the compound. Here's how to match the pad to the job.

The short version
When people plan their first machine polish, they obsess over the compound and the polisher and treat the pad as an afterthought. That’s backwards. The padis what actually meets the paint, and it does as much to decide the result as the liquid you put on it. The same compound on a stiff cutting pad and on a soft finishing pad will behave like two different products — one levels defects, the other refines gloss.
Choosing a pad comes down to four questions: what is it made of (foam, microfiber, or wool), where does it sit on the cut-to-finish scale, does it fit your polisher, and how does it pair with the compound. Get those right and you rarely need more than a handful of pads. Here is how to think about each one.
Pad material: foam, microfiber, and wool
Almost every pad you will meet falls into one of three material families, and each has a job it does best.
Foam
Foam is the default and the most versatile. It comes in a wide range of densities and cell structures, which is why the same material can be built into an aggressive cutting pad or a plush finishing pad. Foam is forgiving, easy to control, and easy to clean, which makes it the right starting point for most beginners. Its weakness is heat — foam insulates, so it can build up heat on the paint if you park the machine in one spot, and it cuts more slowly than the other two materials for a given amount of effort.
Microfiber
Microfiber pads have a thin foam core faced with short microfiber fingers. Those fibers cut faster and run cooler than foam, so a microfiber pad on a dual-action polisher can remove defects that would otherwise need a rotary. That speed is why they are popular for correction on a DA. The trade-offs: they load up with spent product quickly, they tend to leave a slightly hazier finish that often needs a foam finishing pass to clear, and they wear out sooner. Many people keep one or two for cutting and switch to foam to finish.
Wool
Wool is the traditional heavy-cutting material, and it still cuts harder and cooler than almost anything else. It shines on serious defects, hard clear coats, and larger jobs where you want to remove material quickly. It is also the least beginner-friendly — it is more aggressive, throws more product, and is more likely to leave marring that has to be polished out afterward. Unless you already know you are tackling heavy correction, most home detailers can skip wool entirely and stay with foam and maybe a microfiber cutting pad.
The cut-to-finish spectrum (and the color-code trap)
Within any material, pads are graded on how aggressive they are — how much they “cut.” It helps to picture a spectrum:
- Cutting / heavy.Stiff, dense pads built to remove defects — deeper swirls, sanding marks, oxidation. They cut fast but leave their own light haze that a softer pad has to refine.
- Polishing / medium. The all-rounders. They remove lighter defects and restore gloss in one step, and for a lot of daily drivers a single medium pad and a mid-range polish is all the job needs.
- Finishing / soft.Plush, springy pads that barely cut. Their job is to refine — to clear the haze a cutting step left, apply a finishing polish or glaze, or lay down a coat of protection.
Here is the part that trips everyone up: pad color does not mean the same thing from one brand to the next. One maker’s black pad is a soft finisher; another’s black is an aggressive cutter. There is no industry-wide color standard. Never buy or grab a pad based on its color alone — read the label or the product page, which will describe it as cutting, polishing, or finishing (and often show where it sits relative to the brand’s other pads). Treat color as nothing more than a way to tell your own pads apart on the bench.
Matching the pad to your polisher
A pad has to physically fit the backing plate on your machine, and the fit matters more than beginners expect. Two things to get right.
First, size.Pads are sold by diameter, and smaller pads generally cut faster and are easier to control on curves and tight areas, while larger pads cover flat panels quickly. What matters is matching the pad to your polisher and its backing plate rather than chasing the biggest pad you can find — an oversized pad on a small machine loses correcting power and strains the motor. Second, the backing plate should be slightly smaller than the pad — usually the pad overhangs the plate by a small margin. That overhang lets the edge of the pad flex over contours without the hard plate digging in and marring an edge or a body line. If your plate is the same size as the pad or larger, the exposed rim of the plate can catch the paint. Pads and plates come sized to work together, so buy them as a matched set for your machine.
The pad and the compound are one system
This is the idea that pulls everything together, and it is the one most beginners miss: the pad and the liquid work as a system, and you tune the aggressiveness with both. Cut comes from the combination, not from either piece alone.
That gives you a simple way to dial in a job. An aggressive pad with a mild polish, or a soft pad with a stronger compound, land in a similar middle ground — but the smart move is to start with the least aggressive combination that clears the defect and step up only if you need to. How many pads do you actually need?
Fewer than the marketing suggests. You do not need one of every color in the set. For a first correction on a typical daily driver, a sensible starter kit is:
- Two or three of your main working pad(a medium polishing foam for most cars). You want more than one of the same pad so you can swap to a clean, dry one when the first loads up — a saturated pad stops cutting well.
- One cutting pad for the heavier defects, if the paint needs it. Microfiber or a firm foam cutter both work on a DA.
- One or two finishing pads to refine gloss and, later, to lay down wax or sealant.
The reason to double up on the pad you will use most is airflow and moisture: as a pad fills with spent product it works less and heats up more. Rotating in a fresh pad keeps the cut consistent and lets the used one dry out. A beginner can genuinely correct a whole car with a small handful of pads managed this way — you do not need a drawer full.
Keeping pads clean — and knowing when to toss one
A pad only performs if it is clean. Two habits make the difference on a single job.
- Clean the pad on the fly.Every couple of panels, stop and clear the spent product out of the pad — a quick brush over the spinning pad, or a wipe on a clean microfiber towel, knocks the caked residue loose so the pad keeps cutting. This is the single most common thing beginners forget, and it is why their results fade halfway through a job.
- Swap before you saturate. When a pad feels heavy, damp, or gummy, no amount of on-the-fly cleaning will fully revive it mid-job. Rotate to a dry one and let the used pad rest.
After the job, wash your pads so they are ready next time. Rinse them out, work in a dedicated pad cleaner or a little car shampoo, rinse until the water runs clear, and let them air dry fully — a damp pad stored away can sour and break down. Foam and microfiber pads both survive many washes if you treat them gently; don’t wring foam hard enough to tear the cells.
Pads are consumables, so replace them when they show it. Retire a pad when the foam is torn or separating from its backing, when a microfiber face is matted flat and no longer fluffs up after washing, or when it simply won’t come clean. A worn pad cuts unevenly and can mar paint — and since a pad costs a small fraction of a single professional detail, there is no sense nursing a dead one and risking the finish.

The pad is not an accessory to the compound — it is half the tool. Pick your material for the job (foam for almost everything, microfiber or wool when you need more cut), place it on the cut-to-finish scale by reading the label rather than trusting the color, and make sure it fits your machine with a slightly smaller backing plate behind it. Remember that the pad and the compound set the aggressiveness together, start with the mildest combination that works, and keep a spare of your main pad so you can always swap in something clean.
