What sling actually is

Sling is the fine spray of greasy, dark specks that shows up along your lower doors and rocker panels after the first drive on freshly dressed tires. It happens because a tire is a spinning surface, and anything sitting loose on it — excess, uncured dressing — gets flung outward and up onto the paint by centrifugal force as the wheel turns. The one rule: thin coats, wiped back

  3. Apply a thin, even coat.Wipe a light, uniform layer around the sidewall in a smooth continuous motion, keeping it off the tread. Resist the urge to reload the pad constantly — a little product covers a lot of tire, and thin is the whole point.
  4. Let it flash and absorb.Give the dressing a few minutes to flash off. As the carrier evaporates, the film soaks into the rubber and the surface goes from wet and shiny toward tacky. This is the dressing setting — rushing past it is how loose film ends up on your paint.
  5. Wipe back the excess. Take a clean, dry microfiber (or the dry side of the applicator) and lightly pass over the whole tire. Life doesn’t always allow a long cure. If you need to drive soon after dressing, lean harder on the two steps that don’t need time: apply an extra-thin coat, and wipe it back thoroughly. The trade is a slightly less glossy look in exchange for clean paint — a good deal on a busy day.
